The water was full of herring, living rivers of them as far down and out as you could see. You could swim down through a wall of them and they'd open around you and close right back up. The trick is not to end up inside the ball, because you can't see what's coming, and humpbacks come through two and three abreast vacuuming everything in their path. The orcas never worried me. They come through precise and unhurried, and they always know exactly where you are.
